Orthodontics isn’t just about braces and Invisalign.
Whether used before, after, or at the same time as braces or Invisalign, these devices can play an integral role in your treatment.
Retainer
Retainers are often considered optional after orthodontic treatment, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. After you have worn your last Invisalign trays and had your braces removed, your teeth will continue to shift for the rest of your life. Retainers help you maintain that perfect smile you worked so hard to achieve - but only if you wear them as directed.
That's why we offer customized retainers at no extra cost. Kids are more likely to wear a retainer with pizazz, so we'll personalize their retainer with sparkles, stars, baseball stitching, or whatever else they dream up!

Forsus Appliance
At Smith Orthodontics, we want every patient’s treatment to be as effective as possible, which sometimes means using different methods for different people. Forsus is an appliance that can be used in place of elastic bands - which some patients do not want to wear - to correct bite issues.
It is essentially a spring that is connected to the top and bottom braces. Once in place, it applies continuous gentle pressure to align the jaws while eliminating the need for patients to string elastic bands between their braces.

Herbst Appliance
A Herbst appliance is used to correct an overbite by holding the lower jaw in its proper position as it grows. Because it is permanently attached to the teeth towards the back of the mouth, it is not extremely visible, and the patient benefits from around-the-clock treatment. Herbst appliances are generally used for 9 to 12 months.

Mouthguard
If you play sports and have braces, a mouthguard is more important than ever. It will protect your teeth, braces, and the inside of your cheeks and lips from injury. To keep our patients’ teeth safe, we offer Shock Doctor mouthguards and new Sisu mouthguards, made from thinner, stronger material, and custom-fit to your smile at our office.

Palatal Expander
Often used in early orthodontics, a palatal expander does just what the name says - it expands the palate, or upper part of the mouth. Expanding the upper jaw provides more room for adult teeth to come in properly if your child has a small or narrow jaw. Palatal expanders are generally used before braces or Invisalign.
